ILSP Grids

I’m sure that lots of people will have come across these already but I thought I’d share them anyway. I think they are great for focusing student’s ideas on the key areas of analysis and preferable to pages of indiscernible notes.

Here’s what the letters stand for:

I = Interpretation: What is the poem about?

L = Language: What linguistic devices are used? What’s the effect?

S = Structure: How is the poem structured? What’s the effect?

P = Personal Response: What do you think about the poem? How effective is it?

A good way to remember ILSP is either as I Love Studying Poetry or (perhaps more popular with students) I Loathe Studying Poetry.

 I usually have students place the ILSP info into grids and they’ve become pretty accustomed to the process now. Here’s a blank example:
